It’s very easy to forget about printing in our digital age since most of our work is done online, we read e-books and online newspapers, follow social media platforms and work with e-mails. However, print media not only exists nowadays, but pretty popular, from newspaper and magazines to billboards, brochures, business cards, flyers, and of course, printed books.

Pearl Buck, a famous American writer and novelist once said that if you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday. For that reason, here is a quick timeline of print media, primarily books and newspapers and their development throughout the history.

Back in history, print media played a significant role in development of a nation by keeping or sharing important events and happenings. Although we have a very wide range of media industries, print media still remains as one of the oldest in history. We also know that it is a very popular and inexpensive form of advertising since it can reach a wide target audience.

So, print media history is divided into 5 main ages, which are:

1. Pre-industrial age printing (600-1830)

2. Industrial age printing (1840-1955)

3. Early digital printing (1955-1984)

4. Digital printing age (1984-2007)

5. New printing age (2007-present)
